If you are expecting a refund, you can track its status within 24 hours of e-filing (or 4 weeks after mailing a paper return).
Checking Your Status
Use the Where’s My Refund? tool on IRS.gov or the IRS2Go mobile app. You will need three pieces of information:
- Your Social Security Number (SSN) or ITIN.
- Your filing status (e.g., Single, Married Filing Jointly).
- The exact whole dollar amount of your refund.
Common Reasons for Delays
- Errors: Math errors or missing signatures can flag a return for manual review.
- Offsets: Your refund may be reduced (offset) to pay past-due federal tax, state income tax, state unemployment compensation debts, or child support.
- Identity Theft: If the IRS suspects identity theft, they may send a letter asking you to verify your identity before releasing the refund.
