An IP PIN is a 6-digit number assigned by the IRS to prevent someone else from filing a tax return using your Social Security number.
How do I get one?
- Victims of ID Theft: If you are a confirmed victim of tax-related identity theft, the IRS will mail you a CP01A Notice with your new IP PIN every year.
- Voluntary Opt-In: Any taxpayer can voluntarily opt-in to the IP PIN program to secure their tax account. You can retrieve your IP PIN online through your IRS Online Account.
Using Your IP PIN
- You must enter this 6-digit number on your tax return (signature section) or your e-filed return will be rejected.
- If you lose your IP PIN, you can retrieve it online or call the IRS to have it reissued by mail.
