Amending a Return: When and How (Form 1040-X)

If you discover an error on a filed return, you may need to file an amended return using Form 1040-X.

When to Amend

  • Do Amend: If you need to correct your filing status, income, deductions, or credits.
  • Do Not Amend: For simple math errors (the IRS usually corrects these) or missing forms (the IRS will send a letter requesting them).

The 3-Year Rule

To claim a refund, you generally must file Form 1040-X within 3 years after the date you filed your original return or within 2 years after the date you paid the tax, whichever is later.

How to File

You can now e-file Form 1040-X with commercial tax software for the current and two prior tax years. Processing can take up to 16 weeks.
